All About ‘The Last Kingdom’ Season 5!

The Last Kingdom is a Netflix Original historical-fiction drama which is based on The Saxon Stories by author Bernard Cornwell. This series was once a co-production between  the British broadcaster BBC and Netflix. However, since the third season, the series production has been entirely handled by Netflix.

Netflix has left us wanting even more of Uhtred of Bebbanburg and his adventures around Anglo-Saxon England, after another incredible season of The Last Kingdom. Though the series has not been yet renewed by Netflix.

Renewal

The Last Kingdom has got a pending status for the fifth season. However, we are just over  two months since the release of The Last Kingdom season four on Netflix. We’re still waiting for news on renewal.

Nigel Merchant, executive producer of the series has expressed how much interest there is in doing a fifth season in a Q&A with Radio Times:

We’re very hopeful, we’d love to do a season five. I think all of us want to tell a story and it’s always much more satisfying if you can tell a complete story throughout all the various seasons. I think I speak for everyone when I say that we really do love making it.

Adding more fuel to the fire of speculation, former showrunner Stephen Butchard, in an interview with Winter is Coming, stated that he expects the production of the series to continue, slowly for now.

Season 4 and its Popularity

The Last Kingdom season four has been performing incredibly well with subscribers on Netflix since its release. The series  also has traveled well internationally, appearing in numerous top ten lists around the globe. Particularly in Germany and France.

Whilst the series never peaked at number one in the United Kingdom, and the US,  it was only beaten by equally great shows such as After Life, and Never Have I Ever, respectively. However The Last Kingdom remained in the top ten for just over three weeks, its last appearance being on May 18th, 2020.
