All Hail the Popcorn King: A Documentary film on Joe R. Lansdale

The author of the purple sage receives a reading with the aid of fangirl documentarian Hansi Oppenheimer in All Hail the Popcorn King.

New York documentarian Hansi Oppenheimer kicked off her profession with a movie about the band The Replacements (Color Me Obsessed: A Film About The Replacements). It took her almost a decade to complete. She then set about making a documentary about cult movie historian Joe Bob Briggs titled Squee Fu: Fans Celebrate Joe Bob Briggs.

Lansdale is one of his greater than 50 novels, four hundred brief stories, and limitless comedian books and screenplays. But whilst a prolific storyteller, Lansdale is no regular writer. He’s the type of man who when tasked with writing a sequel to The Drive-In. He subtitled it Not Just One of Them Sequels. He knew you couldn’t pores and skin a rabbit and preserve it as a pet. The Texas native additionally stimulated an era of suspense writers. The immersive and obsessive documentary on the author, All Hail the Popcorn King, has been journeying the united states of America and will be launched wider over the coming months.

In crafting this project, Oppenheimer interviewed a range of Briggs fans, such as widespread followers like novelist David J. Schow and former Fangoria editor Tony Timpone. By this time, Oppenheimer had emerged as pals with novelist Joe R. Lansdale (The Bottoms, The Drive-In, etc.) via social media and by way of having visited his domestic in Nacogdoches, Texas to interview him for her YouTube channel. She had been a fan of his work seeing that the 1980s. So, naturally, she reached out to him to take part in Squee Fu.

A Documentary film about a prolific genre fiction writer, Joe R. Lansdale

Hansi Oppenheimer is not just any documentary filmmaker. She put the grr in fangirl. Her upcoming All Hail the Popcorn King promises to be a “five-star” documentary on the award-winning author and screenwriter. The film is a tribute to and examination of the Lone Star State’s “writer of the purple rage.” Lansdale writes in every genre and almost every format. And as per the press statement, he’s even saddled “his brand of ‘martial science,’ aka Shen Chuan.”

Lansdale used to be a fan of Briggs. They shared many of the equal interests, as evidenced via their respective works. However, Lansdale did no longer interview for the project. He did something else—he wrote a unique, original essay about Briggs for the film.
