Ammonite is an upcoming movie written and directed by Francis Lee. Luckily, Lee managed to finish the film just before the lockdown and it is all ready to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on 11 September 2020. The film is not a biopic, said lee. It is inspired by the life of Mary Anning, a fossil-hunting paleontologist and is set in the 1840s. The film focuses on the romantic and intense relationship between two women in an era of patriarchy.
Due to the COVID 19 situation, the film had to face a number of cancellations in its premiere. Originally, Ammonite was all set to world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and then at the Telluride Film Festival in September 2020. But the current situation did not allow the film to opt for it’s scheduled to premiere. NEON acquired US distribution rights to the film.
