Antebellum: Plot and Cast
Veronica Henley, a successful author played by Hidden Figures actress Janelle Monáe tries to break free from an alternate reality. She ends up becoming a sexually abused slave during the Underground Railroad period. This movement marks an effort to free African American slaves and ship them to freer parts of America or Canada.
The movie follows the path of the many features made on the topic of racism, after the critical success of Get Out. As a slave, Veronica’s name is Eden and gets beat up incessantly at the plantation. Veronica in the present time also faces many micro-aggressions. The most marked ones are by Elizabeth, played by Jena Malone.
Eric Lange plays ‘Him’, the plantation owner and Veronica/Eden’s abuser. Jack Huston plays Captain Jasper, the overseer at the plantation. Kiersey Clemons plays Julia, a pregnant slave woman, while Tongayi Chirisa plays Eli, one of the slaves and Veronica’s friend.
The film features two narratives, the present Veronica and the enslaved Eden. Both of these women are connected with each other through much more than the past. In that sense, Veronica becomes a survivor of the collective abuse her race has suffered. Through tightly controlled scenes, the movie thrills audiences till the very end.
