ATL is regarded as a cult film in the rap community. The 2006 film was the directorial debut of music video director Chris Robinson. The screenplay of the film was written by Tina Gordon Chism, inspired from an original story by Antwone Fisher. It was produced by Dallas Austin and Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins (of the R&B group TLC),and was loosely based on their experiences growing up in Atlanta, Georgia. ATL had a decent box-office run, grossing $21 million on a budget of $7 million, and received fairly positive critic reviews. A sequel to the film was confirmed by the cast of the film in 2015.
ATL 2- What we know so far
Director Chris Robinson confirmed in January 2015 that a sequel is in the works. In March of the same year, lead actor T.I. also confirmed the news via an Instagram post. It has been five years since then, but there seems to be little development in the making of the sequel. The sequel hasn’t been approved by Warner Bros. as of now, but hope still remains for ATL 2.
If and when the sequel does happen, it is expected to be directed by Chris Robinson. The cast from the first film is also expected to return for the sequel. T.I. as Rashad Swann, Evan Ross as Anton “Ant” Swann, Lauren London as New New aka Erin Garnett, Jackie Long as Benjamin “Esquire” Gordon, Jason Weaver as Teddy, Albert Daniels as Brooklyn and Keith David as John Garnett, are all expected to reprise their respective roles.
Release Date of ATL 2
The sequel was confirmed by the director and the lead actor five years ago. But it still remains to be greenlit by Warner Bros., the studio that distributed the first film. Whenever that happens, we can expect the film to start filming soon after that. As of right now, there is no official release date for ATL 2.
