AT&T to activate it’s 5G network on December 21



The telecommunication industry is going to usher in a new era as it AT&T will activate its 5G network in 12 US cities on December 21 this Friday. The first smartphone use the network is a Netgear-made Nighthawk 5G hotspot, but you can’t get your hands on one yet.


To spread the word and catch the market, the carrier will be providing both the hotspot and the data for free which will continue for a period. After that, it will cost $500 for the hotspot while the first data plan will offer 15GB data for $70 a month.

The American company is developing two 5G networks- sub 6GHz and mmWave. The one that will be going active from December 21 is the mmWave, which can deliver high bandwidth in crowded areas but is limited in its coverage area. However, the sub 6GHz has better coverage but is slower than the mmWave though it’s faster than LTE. It will be launched next year.

As for the list of devices supporting the network, 2019 has been expected to be the year of 5G smartphones. Qualcomm President previously said that every vendor is working on a 5G device right now with smartphones like Samsung Galaxy S10, Huawei P30, OnePlus 7, OPPO 5G flagship, Honor 5G smartphone, Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 and Sony Xperia XZ4 to come with 5G support. Many manufacturers will already launch these smartphones in the Q1 2019 in events like CES 2019 and MWC 2019.

5G network or fifth generation cellular networks will be providing download 1Gbps when fully deployed which are almost 100 times the existing data speeds. With these high speeds, we will be able to download a high-quality movie in seconds or we can just stream it.

Another telecom company Verizon launched a 5G network that aims to replace the current broadband networks. AT&T has opted to go for a different approach and go for mobile devices instead. As for these networks in other countries, it maybe sometime before 5G becomes mainstream. Besides the US, South Korea and Japan are also preparing to deploy the network in their territories next year. As for the Indian market, it is still struggling to get full capacity on the 4G networks and ranks one of the worst in the world in terms of speed. In India, the telecom regulatory authority of India (TRAI) has already started the auctioning process and is expected to be fully adopted by 2022.
