AT&T’s 5G network is 5G with a twist

Published

on

AT&T’s new 5G network may seem exciting and maybe you are wondering when you can get your hands on it. 4G to 5G is certainly nice, however, it has two sides of it. The technology may reach you soon than you expect but it’s not actually 5G. Don’t get confused, it’s exactly what the AT&T marketing division wants you to be.

5G

First of all, 5G is real but the thing is it will be available in a limited number of places at least for an initial time. Also, add to the fact there are no 5G supported devices on the market right now through a bunch of those are expected to launch early at CES and MWC. However, the rollout of both the 5G network and the handsets will take some time.

5G is expected to be one of the trending buzzwords of 2019. So, in order to jump into the hot action, AT&T came up with a new trick. The network is called “5G E” but it’s not actually 5G. It is 4G with 3×4 MIMO and 256 QAM. You may call it the best iteration of 4G ever, but its still 4G and far away from what we are expecting from 5G networks.

Ignoring all this technical talk AT&T excs said they will call it 5G from 2019 onwards and will be working with Android manufacturers so that it will show 5G E indicator in the notification bar. The carrier plans to roll the 5G indicator to “a handful of devices” while an AT&T spokesperson said that more devices will be showing the indicator in spring 2019.

To differentiate the real 5G network, the actual 5G network will be branded 5G+ which will launch sometime after the 5G E network. AT&T isn’t the first carrier ever to pull something like this with T-Mobile calling its 3G HSPA+ networks like 4G and Sprint calling its WiMax Networks as 4G earlier.
