After Netflix acquired the rights to the hugely popular animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, they have now also acquired the rights to its sequel The Legend of Korra. It is set to release on the platform on August 14.
The story of Avatar
Avatar: The Legend of Korra is set in the same universe as that of Avatar: The Last Airbender and the events in the former take place 70 years after those in The Last Airbender. It follows the story of the next Avatar Korra, a seven year old girl who belongs to the Southern Water Tribe. She is the successor to Aang.
Korra receives her training from Aang’s son, Tenzin. Korra has already mastered three of the four elements, Earth, Water, and Fire and now must master the art of airbending under the tutelage of Tenzin.
The Legend of Korra picks up from where The Last Airbender finished, with the deadly war started by The Fire Nation now ended. Korra now must train and maintain peace as she heads to Republic City, a city where benders and nonbenders live together. Korra must master the training of airbending and free Republic City from the dangers of crime and revolution that threaten to tear the city apart.
The Avatar franchise revolves around four societies that correspond to one classical element, namely Fire, Water, Earth, and Air. At any given time, there is only one Avatar who is able to manipulate all four elements and is the peacekeeper between the four societies. Avatar: The Last Airbender focused on Aang’s journey as the Avatar and The Legend of Korra focuses on Korra’s journey on a similar path.
Although The Legend of Korra did not receive as great reviews as its successor when it first aired on Nickelodeon in 2012, it soon found its own voice and the last two seasons were quite well received by ardent fans of the well-known Avatar franchise.
