Scarlett Johansson’s character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow has for a long time, deserved a standalone film of its own. And it is finally happening. After Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe ended with Spiderman: Far From Home, Black Widow was announced as the first film in Phase 4 of the MCU. The film has been long awaited by the fans of the MCU all over the world. The film was officially announced in 2019, at the San Diego Comic-Con, by executive producer of the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise, Kevin Feige.
Cast of Black Widow
Cate Shortland will be directing the film. She is known for her 2012 film Lore, of which Scarlett Johansson was a big fan. This fact had helped her bag the director’s role for Black Widow, when the executives at Marvel were scouting for a female director for the film. Scarlett Johansson will be playing the role of Natasha Romanoff and the titular character Black Widow, as she is famously known. Florence Pugh has been cast to play the role of Yelena Belova and also one of the Black Widows. She is a sister figure to Natasha and was trained in the same Red Room as Natasha. David Harbour will be playing the role of Alexei Shostakov and Red Guardian. He acts as a father figure to Romanoff and Belova, and is a super-soldier, much like Captain America. O.T. Fagbenle has been cast to play the role of Rick Mason, a former ally of Natasha from her S.H.I.E.L.D days. Rachel Weisz will be playing the role of Melina Vostokoff and another one of the Black Widows. She will be acting as a mother-figure to Natasha and Yelena. William Hurt will be reprising his role as Thaddeus Ross from previous MCU films. Ray Winstone will be playing the role of Dreykov; the head of the Red Room.
