I’m going to be judgemental and I’m going to make some controversy, but still, I’ll say it again and again – Cate Blanchett is the most skilled and talented actress of my generation (I could have said Kate Winslet but I’m not in the mood). Lionsgate, earlier in a press release announced that the lead character “Lilith” in the new adaptation of “Borderlands ” is going to be played by the Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett. This is not the first time for Blanchett acting in a fantasy flick, she has earlier acted in “Thor: Ragnarok” and “Lord of the Rings”. Clearly, her mega fame would help with the movie, even the greatest actors like Brando have worked in fantasy movies like “Superman” and have made fortunes for the franchise and themselves alike.
Lilith, a Siren with extraordinary powers. Lilith was one of the four playable classes in the first Borderlands game and an NPC in all the rest. Lilith is known for her ability to “Phasewalk” which makes her turn invisible to enemies, move at an increased speed and then blast enemies with her Phase Blast power.
The live-action movie will be directed by Eli Roth and the script will be penned by Craig Mazin (Chernobyl). Blanchett and Roth have worked together in “The House with a Clock in its Walls”. This is what Roth had to say about the splendid news in a press release:
“I’m so lucky to have the amazing Cate Blanchett starring in Borderlands, We had the most incredible collaboration together on The House with a Clock in Its Walls, and I believe there’s nothing she can’t do. From drama to comedy and now action, Cate makes every scene sing. Working with her is truly a director’s dream come true, and I feel so fortunate that I get to do it again on an even bigger scale. Everyone brings there A-game to work with Cate, and I know together we’re going to create another iconic character in her already storied career.”
You might remember Roth as “The Bear Jew” in Tarantino’s “Inglorious Basterds”, he kills his prey by beating them to a pulp with a Bat, so yeah, we can comfortably say he is well equipped to direct a violent movie
The live-action Borderlands movie was announced way back in 2015 but it was stuck due to Roth’s involvement in other projects, it was announced earlier this year that Roth is going to direct the movie. Borderlands takes place in a fictional planet “Pandora” where players search for mysterious relics. It is a first-person shooting game with a touch of dark humour, absurd violence and horror. Although no plot points have been announced, the movie could either be an original story or could be based on Borderlands 2, which is the most famous instalment of the franchise and features “Lilith” heavily. We will have to wait for more news to come.
