Calito carries on New York Hip-Hop tradition in 2021

As part of an honorary renaming program, Sedgwick Avenue now carries the name Hip Hop Boulevard. Only true hip-hop fans knew about DJ Kool Herc’s presence at 1520 Sedgwick before it was co-named. The secret is now globally recognized.  

As it is against city law to name streets after living individuals, Kool Herc Street became Hip Hop Boulevard instead, paying homage to hip-hop’s entire history and culture.  

As hip-hop culture grew in the Bronx slowly, it continued to grow from 1973 to 1977. An unfortunate accident caused its explosion. During the great blackout of 1977, DJ equipment was stolen in electronic stores throughout New York.  

New York had a thousand new DJs overnight, resulting in an explosion of parties in parks around the city. In parks like Cedar Playground, DJ crews would set up their equipment on light poles and host teenage parties.  

The Bronx was the birthplace of hip-hop in the ’70s; however, Queens assumed control in the ’80s. In Hollis, Queens, some of hip-hop’s royalty is born. There are many notable residents from the city, including LL Cool J, Run-DMC, and businessman Russell Simmons.  

During the late ’80s, Notorious B.I.G. (better known as Biggie Smalls to his fans) grew up in Brooklyn, a culturally rich but crime-ridden area called Clinton Hill/Bedford-Stuyvesant.  

There is an undisputed video of Biggie spouting lyrics outside a bodega in his neighborhood at the age of 17. The experiences he had there influenced the lyrics of his classic debut album, “Ready to Die.” In 2013, Notorious B.I.G.’s childhood home was listed for $725,000.
