Can You Post Cannabis-Related Content on TikTok?

Published

So, you’ve purchased Purple Kush autoflower seeds and are ready to document the process for your followers. Can you post weed on TikTok? Although there are many creators with marijuana content, there are some loopholes to jump through.

Read on for more about TikTok’s guidelines on weed content and how you can get around them.

TikTok Rules on Cannabis Content

Can you smoke on TikTok live? According to the app’s community guidelines, all forms of cannabis are restricted.

It doesn’t matter if you have a legal business or are operating from a marijuana-friendly state. Even if regularly smoking on live streams is permitted on your other socials, you’ll be penalized on TikTok.

TikTok has an AI that identifies cannabis content. Here are three things that may happen to you if you create explicit weed videos:

1. A Shadow Ban

A shadow ban occurs when a social media platform restricts your posts and hides them from the hashtags you use. It can also leave you on the lower end of the search results.

When shadowbanned, you have a narrower reach, and your followers aren’t able to interact as much. The worst part is you won’t get a notification warning that you’ve been shadowbanned. The algorithm is programmed to secretly restrict content that doesn’t abide by TikTok’s guidelines.

2. Deleted Post

You put a lot of effort into making videos, but if they don’t abide by the rules, you risk having them deleted. Remember, you can’t smoke weed on TikTok.

It doesn’t matter how many likes or comments a cannabis-related video receives; the algorithm will remove it. Two things can cause a deleted post: viewers report it, or you do something inappropriate.

3. Deleted Account

All the punishments are pretty bad, but this one’s the worst. To have your account deleted, you’d have to make a lot of inappropriate content or have multiple reported videos.

Once TikTok removes your profile, it’s impossible to retrieve, and you’ll likely have to start a new account and gain followers from scratch.

How to Post Cannabis Content on TikTok

If there are so many rules, how can you post weed on TikTok? You can successfully get around the AI if you’re smart about it. You could even build a huge following and grow your business.

Here are five tips:

1. Don’t Be Explicit

Most social media apps are against the direct display of cannabis. Any image of the bud is likely to result in a removed post.

The AI can identify and remove videos with visible marijuana. Can you smoke weed on TikTok live? You can if you’re inconspicuous, but it’s still a considerable risk.

A classic example occurred in 2019 when Mark Zuckerberg revealed how his AI photo-scanning software could tell the difference between broccoli and cannabis. It flagged the image with the buds, removed the post, and shadowbanned the account.

2. Use Inconspicuous Hashtags

You can’t use the words “cannabis,” “marijuana,” or “weed” on your posts. The AI immediately identifies them and penalizes your account.

TikTok users have developed unique terminology to avoid the system. They add emojis or use hashtags without explicitly mentioning the restricted words. Here are some examples:

  • #ouid
  • #w33d
  • #ouidschmoker
  • #st0ner
  • #cannabiz
  • #420🍃
  • #stonetok
  • #green
  • #leaf

3. Educate Instead of Displaying

You’re less likely to get banned if you provide a learning experience on growing cannabis seeds or other educational content. Can you smoke on TikTok? People explicitly toking or rolling joints are more likely to get detected as the AI quickly picks up on them.

If you focus on science and accredited publications, or your content takes an educational format, you may be the exception to the rule. Most social media sites favor these accounts as they add tremendous value to the platform.

Many budtenders talk about terpenes, strain types, and new products on their pages, so adding any form of learning lowers your chances of removal.

You can also use funny and educational skits or unpack stoner shows. This format is popular on TikTok, and the app has many built-in tools for creators.

4. Be a Trend Hopper

TikTok has a new trend almost every day. From dance moves to fashion, hop on any movement you can. Why? It’s an excellent way to expand your following. Users who don’t know where to find weed content may stumble across your videos on the For You Page.

If you’re not one to do the CitiRokk or hit the Woah, you can still hop on the latest craze using music. TikTok trends usually involve a particular song. Lay it over your videos, and you could end up on the For You Page. Check out the latest stats to know what’s popular.

5. Embrace Your Uniqueness

While you can’t post smoking videos on TikTok, you can gain an impressive following. You’ll acquire loyal fans when you create a lasting impact, even in the worst-case scenario of account removal. Social media platforms are buzzing with content, so focus on what makes you unique.

To gain a loyal following on TikTok, you must be authentic and relatable. You can also do giveaways (legally, of course). Some creators gift cannabis-themed clothing items or products from their brand.

Final Thoughts

Can you show weed on TikTok? The answer isn’t clear-cut. Technically, you can’t because it’s against the community guidelines, and you risk being shadowbanned or removed from the platform.

However, many users regularly post cannabis content without implications. They use inconspicuous hashtags, educational content, and other methods to avoid being noticed by the AI. Following our tips, you too can successfully post weed videos on TikTok.
