Carrion: Release Date and Gameplay!

Indie developer Phobia Game Studio has collaborated with Devolver Digital to unleash Carrion, a reverse-horror game where players control a dangerous tentacle beast trapped in an experimental research laboratory.

Carrion is being developed by the Warsaw, Poland based independent game maker Phobia Game Studio. Development at Carrion started around October 2017, according to developer Sebastian Krośkiewicz’s tweets.

Release Date

Carrion is expected to release on July 23, 2020, on Windows, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One. The game was confirmed to have a PlayStation 4 release scheduled until the announcement of the release date of July 23, but no release date for PlayStation 4 has been revealed.

In October 2019, Phobia Game Studio released a trial version of the game.

Cris Velasco’s soundtrack will be launched as of July 23, 2020, by the video game label Materia Group.

Gameplay

Carrion’s gameplay was first publicly presented at the 2018 Game Developers Conference. Devolver Digital posted an official announcement trailer for the game to YouTube on June 9, 2019. The game was marketed by Devolver Digital during its press conference at E3 2019.

The game will act as a follow-up to the gory side-scroller Butcher from Phobia, which has had players taking on the part of a killer cyborg designed to kill mankind.

Carrion is set up in a large research laboratory where scientists are keeping a mutant in captivity to test its behavior and genetics. One day, through ventilation ducts, the creature discovers a way to break away from its containment structure. Then it starts working its way around the building.

Players power a tentacled, fiery, amorphous creature. The creature must fly through a building, creeping through winds and destroying scientists and soldiers. When the game progresses, players can get improvements such as dash ability, which can be used to bust through wooden barricades and otherwise inaccessible areas and increase in height.

If Phobia Game Studio can find the right balance between complexity and engaging gameplay, Carrion could end up being one of the indie breakout hits of 2020. At the very least, a self-indulgent power-trip framed in pretty fine pixel art is sure to satisfy horror lovers.
