Thirteen years after Clerks II hit the big screen, director Kevin Smith finally announced Clerks 3. As the spin-off film Jay and Silent Bob Reboot came out in October 2019, the third Clerks film was also announced by Smith via an Instagram post in the same month. The film had its script ready as early as February 2017, but casting disputes delayed it. However, in October 2019, an elated Kevin Smith wrote this on his Instagram post about the announcement of Clerks 3
“It’ll be a movie that concludes a saga. It’ll be a movie about how you’re never too old to completely change your life. It’ll be a movie about how a decades-spanning friendship finally confronts the future. It’ll be a movie that brings us back to the beginning – a return to the cradle of civilization in the great state of #newjersey.”
Clerks 3: What we know so far?
The film will see Brian O’Halloran and Jeff Anderson reprising their roles as Dante and Randal, respectively. Jason Mews and Kevin Smith will also be part of Clerks 3, in supporting roles. Jason Mews will reprise his role as Jay and Kevin Smith will reprise his role as Silent Bob. These two characters also have a franchise of their own, within Smith’s View Askewniverse. That franchise has two films, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001) and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (2019).
Details regarding other cast members of the film are still not out. Kevin Smith had previously written and completed the script for Clerks 3 in 2012, but after Jeff Anderson had dropped out of that project, that script was tanked. After Anderson decided to return to the project, director Kevin Smith decided to start afresh with a new script, which he said he started the night before his announcement post on Instagram.
With a complete script not yet ready, we can expect at least a year before the release date or a teaser comes out for Clerks 3. We can expect the film to release sometime in 2022 if everything works out fine. Until then, you can watch the trailer of Clerks II right here.
