The highly anticipated arrival of Cobra Kai on Netflix is finally here, and there’s lots of stuff to be excited about, including release details about season 3!
The story of Cobra Kai so far
The show stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka both reprising their roles from The Karate Kid as Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence, respectively. The show has all kinds of twists and turns you’d imagine, and despite landing on a platform with a seemingly small demographic at the time, it managed to wow its audiences and critics alike.
The show focuses on Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) trying to redeem himself by mentoring his troubled young neighbour Miguel, played by Xolo Maridueña, in the art of karate, which leads to him restarting the infamous Cobra Kai dojo. The show does a complete turnaround concerning how the audience perceived the main characters of the movie, with Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) now an established and boastful car dealership owner and his nemesis from the movies Johnny Lawrence running odd jobs to survive and support his estranged son, Robby (Tanner Buchanan). However, as the first season progresses, we learn how everything is not as perfect in Daniel’s life as it seems to be, with him still struggling with the loss of his mentor Mr. Miyagi years ago, and his issues with his teenage daughter Samantha, portrayed by Mary Mouser. The show takes even more interesting turns with a love triangle brimming between Samantha, Miguel and Robby. With Miguel being Johnny’s student and Robby being Daniel’s student, things go down for an epic showdown.
The second season, which premiered in April 2019, was also well received by the audiences and critics alike. Martin Kove reprises his role of the evil sensei John Kreese, and the plot thickens further as he takes back control of the Cobra Kai dojo from Johnny. As the season progresses, events from the first season also come to a dramatic conclusion with the aforementioned love triangle setting off events that make the second season an explosive yet cathartic experience.
When is it coming?
With the arrival of both season 1 and 2 on Netflix on August 28, Cobra Kai will finally get the recognition it deserves and the large swathes of viewership that it was lacking ever since the first season landed on YouTube’s subscription platform, YouTube Red (now YouTube Premium) back in May of 2018. For those of you who haven’t checked out Cobra Kai yet, mark your calendars for August 28 when it finally lands on Netflix, with the third season also expected to be released by the end of this year.
