Cops: Paramount Cancelled 33rd Season Following The Protests

Published

on

Cops is not on the Paramount Network and we don’t have any current or future plans for it to return,” a network spokesperson said.

Cops premiered on Fox in 1989 and have aired on Paramount for the past six years.

The plug was pulled on the show earlier this month following the death in police custody of George Floyd. Demonstrators across the U.S. have since called for increased accountability in law enforcement, sparking a movement to disendow the police.

The cancellation of “Cops” after 32 seasons testifies for the effects the protests are having on entertainment companies and their content considerations.

The show’s 33rd season was to premiere on Monday. But no episode has aired on Paramount Network since at least June 1. This comes after protests against police brutality and in support of the Black Lives Matter movement continued across the country.

“Cops” Has Been Around For Big Deal Of Time

Cops was created by John Langley and Malcolm Barbour. The duo tried unsuccessfully for several years, to get a network to carry the program. Fox TV in its initial days picked up the low-cost Cops program.

For the first 25 seasons, Fox broadcasted Cops with reruns of earlier seasons syndicated by local television stations and cable networks. After Fox cancelled the show in May 2013, Spike picked it up for additional five seasons, in addition to reruns of previous seasons. The 30th season premiered on June 17, 2017.

On August 21, 2017, Cops celebrated its 1,000th episode with a live special called Cops: Beyond the Bust, hosted by B99’s fame Terry Crews, which included historical clips from the run of the program as well as reunions of officers and the suspects that they arrested.

The show featured officers of 140 different cities in the United States, Hong Kong, London, and the Soviet Union.

George Floyd Jr. was an African-American man who was killed by police during an arrest in Minneapolis on May 25, 2020. Protests in response to both Floyd’s death, and to police violence against other black people, quickly spread across the United States and internationally. This has stirred a revolution on the streets of almost all the major countries.
