Dark: The Definition of Family Complexity!

Dark just got over with its third season, and we are confused as ever. As Netflix said, we should stop watching Dark for a while and solve easier stuff like calculating the mass of the Earth or maybe reading quantum physics. But the most confusing thing about the show is the family relationships, with every kind of twist and turns possible. But don’t worry, we got you.

People say that Game of Thrones has the most complicated family relationships, but now it seems like we are proved wrong. The story of Dark originates from a dark phase when Jonas’s father kills himself and he contemplates the situation. But the beginning seems nothing given the future instances. Tragic is literally the mood of the show. At one point, the worst cases don’t seem the worst. When you are talking about second cousins through time travel being your lover simplicity goes out the window.

Starting with Jonas Kahnwald, he is the son of Hannah and Michael Kahnwald, and a regular teen with girlfriend Martha Nielsen and friend Bartosz Tiedemann, but turns upside down after his father kills himself. In order to discover the reasons behind the death, he travels back to 1986 only to find that he is related to his girlfriend. Mikkel Nielsen, the youngest Nielsen, accidentally stumbled into the Winden caves and was adopted by Ines Kahnwald and raised to be Michael Kahnwald. Forward to the future, the year 2053, Jonas met the now-adult Elisabeth Doppler and married his nemesis, Noah, leading to the removal of their second cousin. Throwing us back again in the far past, Jonas tried to escape the apocalypse that we learned how he was related to the Tiedemann’s. After running all through time and learning about his terribly complicated family, Jonas planted himself in 1921. That’s where he renamed himself Adam and became obsessed with destroying the timelines.

Talking about Jonas’s mother, Hannah Kahnwald, the situation gets even more complicated. Back during her teen days, she was quite jealous of the relationship between Ulrich Nielsen and Katharina which forced her to go against Nielsen. In another dimension, Hannah becomes pregnant with Jonas’ half-sister Silja. On the other hand, Hannah gets killed by the older Jonas, Adam.

Let’s talk about Martha, shall we? Daughter of Ulrich and Katharina Nielsen, there is a whole triangle between her, her boyfriend Jonas, and Jonas’s father. Martha was also related to Jonas in a different way and Bartosz and Silja Tiedemann were Martha’s great great grandparents. And when Martha took to Eve as Jonas turned to Adam, she tried to protect the timelines so that she could have the future she wants with Jonas.

The relationships are pretty complicated. Actually, for real complicated. But there’s no hurry. Take your time and let them sink in one by one.
