When the live adaptation of the Japanese manga Death Note premiered on Netflix, it received quite a lot of flak for apparently “whitewashing” the film. The film got mixed critic reviews but did garner a lot of eyeballs on the streaming service. The film was directed by Adam Wingard and written by Charles & Vlas Parlapanides and Jeremy Slater. The film is based on the Japanese manga of the same name created by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. It follows the story of a high school student named Light Turner who finds a mysterious supernatural book called the “Death Note”. This book has the power to kill anyone whose name is written in its pages.
A sequel to the film was confirmed by Netflix in August 2018.
Cast of Death Note 2
The first film starred Nat Wolff as Light Turner/Kira, Margaret Qualley as Mia Sutton, Lakeith Stanfield as Lebensborn Atubia/L, Shea Whigham as Light’s father and Detective James Turner and Willem Dafoe as Shinigami Ryuk. It seems unlikely that Margaret Qualley will be back for the sequel, given the ending of the first film. But the entire film is about death and the supernatural, so nothing can be said for sure. Other cast members are likely to return for the sequel, and continue the story from where it was left off in the first film.
As of August 2018, writer Greg Russo is working on the script for the sequel. He also provided an update on Twitter in November 2019, when asked about the whereabouts of Death Note 2.
Whether Adam Wingard returns to direct the sequel or not, is yet to be confirmed. Although he did say back in August 2018 that Netflix was planning on doing two films; provided the first one is watched by a lot of people.
“There are definitely lots of places to go, and we know generally where we would take it. Hopefully people will watch it and Netflix will order a sequel. They definitely are ready to. They just need people to watch it.”
No official announcement has been made for a release date for Death Note 2 yet. We can expect at least two years before Death Note 2 releases on Netflix.
