Dickinson is an American historical comedy-drama TV show that first premiered on Apple TV+ on November 1, 2019. Alena Smith created this hilarious show about the great poet Emily Dickinson. Starring True Grit and The Edge of Seventeen star Hailee Steinfeld, the show was renewed for a second season before the first was released. While it takes us back into Emily Dickinson’s world where she was inspired by the world and wrote beautiful (and gruesome) poetry, it keeps the tone of the narrative relatively modern. This is the story of a girl who struggles to be heard, a story that is still relevant in today’s time.
What is the show all about and when does the second season come out? Well, you will have to read more to find out!
Dickinson: Plot and Cast
Emily, the main female protagonist is a young poet and writer, who is interested in exploring the gender roles in society. She can sometimes be rather brash when trying to find the limits of her own gender and sexuality. As a budding writer, she feels too constricted in the time that she lives in and tries to find her voice in such a world.
Hailee Steinfeld as Emily does a wonderful role playing a girl who doesn’t quite fit in and is fairly imaginative. Rather reminds us of her previous roles, especially as young Nadine in The Edge of Seventeen. Just like Nadine struggled with her best friend becoming her brother’s girlfriend, Emily plays a similar role with her best friend Sue and brother Austin. However, it only gets worse when she falls in love with Sue.
Toby Huss plays her disapproving father, Edward while Jane Krakowski plays Emily Norcross Dickinson, her mother. Adrian Enscoe plays Austin and Ella Hunt plays Sue Gilbert.
