When it comes to the sci-fi genre, there are an endless number of films produced every year in Hollywood. Alien invasion seems to be one of the most exploited genres in the last two decades. However, some sci-fi thrillers stand out from the rest. District 9 was one of those films. The 2009 film explored the aliens among humans theme from a totally different angle and it somehow worked magnificently. The film was produced on a meagre budget of $30 million. It went on to collect $210 million dollars at the box-office, and also got nominated for four Academy Awards. The film was directed by South African director Neill Blomkamp, and was based on his short film of 2006, Alive in Joburg.
District 10 – Will we be seeing a sequel?
District 9 gave us a pretty open-ended conclusion, so there was always a chance of a sequel happening. The director of the film, Neill Blomkamp has stated his desire to do a sequel many times, but with his other projects also taking up his schedule, it could be some time before we see a sequel. During an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit, he had stated his desire to go back to the world he had created.
“Ok, so with District 10 the basic answer is yes. I want to go back to that world and tell the rest of the story with Wikus and Christopher.”
Cast and Release Date of District 10
Neill Blomkamp has time and again said that he has wanted to make a sequel to District 9. So, when it does happen, we can expect him to be in the director’s chair. As far as the cast is concerned, we can expect Sharlto Copley and Jason Cope to be back in their roles of Wikus van de Merwe and Christopher Johnson, respectively. The rest of the cast, however, is still not finalized.
As of June 2020, there has been no official news about the sequel. We still don’t know if it will move forward or will be dropped. If, and when it does happen, we can expect District 10 to release by 2022, at the earliest.
