The Shrek movie franchise had entertained its fanbase during the 2000-2010s. For over a decade, this Dreamworks production franchise has delivered hilarious comedy animated movies! The best animation and cinematography along with a humorous script had garnered Shrek fans from all age groups.

The first movie of the franchise called ‘Shrek‘ released in 2001 and was loved by the audience for its realistic and pragmatic fairytale story cum modern-day love affair. Casting Cameron Diaz for the voice of the female lead and Myke Myers for the male lead got the movie the much-needed attraction.

The story is based on the Disney legend of ‘Sleeping Beauty‘ but with a twist. The creators of Shrek added their own original twists and turns along with this special zing which made the movie an instant hit. Picking a classic fairytale and turning it into a full-blown animated comedy with the right amount of drama, action, and romance had the critics nodding in appreciation.

Shrek, who is an ogre who resides in his swamp along with his companion donkey is made to rescue Princess Fiona. Fiona, who is locked in a tower, far far away, awaits for her true love to come and save her from the misery of being locked away in the tower. When Shrek crosses all hurdles and saves Fiona, she is repulsed by the sight of him.

The story pans out with Fiona being cursed, as she turns into an ogre every night, and for her to break out of that curse she needs to find true love. The first movie ends with the couple finding true love in each other. The movie which was created for the entertainment of the younger audience has tons of hidden messages for the older audiences too!

The predicament faced by the characters, their introspection, realizations which change their outlook towards life. The movie had tons of hard-hitting messages and was a huge success. The success of the first movie got Dreamworks to produce the second part called ‘Shrek 2‘ which came out in 2004 followed by ‘Shrek The Third‘ which was released in 2007.

The second and third part describes the struggles that Shrek and Fiona have to face and tackle to cling on to their love. The various changes they have to make in their lifestyle to please people, the number of villains they have to fight, and the love that they receive from their near dear ones.

Dreamworks surprised its fans and released another part called ‘Shrek Forever After‘, which was part 4 of this movie franchise! The fourth part had a different theme as it gives a spinoff of what would Shreks life be like had he not met Fiona. It showed Shrek stuck in a paradigm wherein, Fiona wasn’t his lover but in fact his nemesis and how he tries to woo her.

The fifth movie which will be released in 2022, has been under the Dreamworks project for a long time. The fifth part which will be premiering after a decade of the last Shrek film will apparently have a different theme from the last four instalments. The fans are speculating new addition to the cast and the possibility of not seeing some of the old characters. While no official statement regarding the release date or the cast has been disclosed, Dreamworks wants to surprise its fans.

According to inside sources, the crew at Dreamworks is assured of the fact that the fans will be left entertained and that the long wait will be worth it.
