Tom Cruise has a knack of doing extreme adrenaline gushing action thrillers. Take for example the Mission Impossible franchise. We’ve had six of those and yet we can’t have enough of them. Edge of Tomorrow is another such film. The film was marketed as “Live Die Repeat.”, and quite frankly, that was what it was about. An army major with no combat experience is thrown into a war with the aliens, where he is exposed to alien blood and gets to live the same day over and over again, just like the aliens. This was the major plot of the first film. Emily Blunt played a war veteran, and together with Cruise, devises a plan to win the war by destroying the brain center of the aliens, The Omega. The film was both a critical and commercial success, grossing over $370 million worldwide.
Edge of Tomorrow 2 – What we know so far
After the release and success of the first film in 2014, a sequel was announced in 2015. But it seems like the sequel is stuck in a time loop itself, much like its main protagonist. There have been numerous rumours around the sequel, but none have developed into something as of now. Christopher McQuarrie, who had written the screenplay for the first film, said in 2015 that Tom Cruise had an idea for a sequel and that the script was in development. It was announced later that Doug Liman would be directing the sequel as well, after the first film. Since then, there have been a lot of delays, with work being done on the script time and again. In 2017, news came out that the sequel would be marketed as Live Die Repeat and Repeat. Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise would be reprising their roles from the first film as Sergeant Rita Vrataski and Major William Cage, respectively.
In January 2020, director Doug Ligman posted on Instagram a photo that gave fans some much needed hope for the sequel. It is believed that Edge of Tomorrow 2 is in development as of now, and will begin shooting after Tom Cruise finishes the filming of Mission Impossible 7 and 8. As for a release date, the film is still in its early stages and does not have an official release date yet.
