Fans Made A Remake Of Spielberg’s ‘Jaws’ During The Lockdown!

The Internet is still in love with Steven Spielberg‘s thriller. Fans made a remake of Jaws to celebrate its 45th Anniversary in the lockdown. This thriller came out in 1975 and was based on Peter Benchley’s novel of the same name. Considered one of the greatest films ever made, Jaws was the prototypical summer blockbuster and has a legacy of its own!

Fans celebrated the 45th anniversary of this groundbreaking shark movie in many ways on the Internet! The #Jaws45 hashtag became viral on Twitter. There were Twitter watch-alongs, one of them was hosted by Kevin Smith, and the themed quizzes on the movie were held. On 20th June, 45 years since the film’s release, a remake of the movie made by fans was released. This feature-length remake was shot entirely in homes, gardens, and swimming pools of fans in the lockdown.

#JawsWeMake- The Remake Made By Fans!

This remake’s originator is Ross Williams, the founder of The Daily Jaws, a website devoted to the movie and fans! Dean Newman, the site’s chief writer is also one of the masterminds behind this remake. The 2 of them also appear in the remake as the movie’s main protagonists- Matt Hooper(played by Richard Dreyfuss) and Quint(played by Robert Shaw).

Jaws-fan remake

Newman said, “We’ve got a good 90 percent of the moments from the film, many using the exact camera angles. Ross and I have appeared in a few scenes together through the magic of editing, him as Hooper and me as Quint. Some people edited their own clips, others sent the odd line here and there so scenes needed building up, which was more of a creative challenge. It’s all been woven together like some magical Jaws quilt.”

One of the best scenes of the movie to recreate was Quint’s monologue. He describes the sinking of the USS Indianapolis at the end of World War II. This scene is quoted as one of the best movie monologues of all time and Shaw’s performance is terrific! “We wanted to include as many entries from Jaws fans as possible, so some scenes, such as Quint’s Indianapolis speech, use four or five different performances. The trick was in picking the best elements of each and making sure they worked together. And it does“, says Newman.

Fans will also get to see British comedian Tim Vine in the remake. Vine is a huge fan of the movie and he plays five different characters. In the trailer, he is seen as Mayor Larry Vaughn. Newman also said, “The project has exceeded our wildest dreams and has been embraced by people at a difficult and challenging time.”

45 Years Later, why are fans still obsessed with Jaws?

For most fans, it’s their first time watching the movie that brings them together as a community. The ‘getting too scared out of your wits’ feeling that they had the first time brings them together.

Newman says, “I’d have seen Jaws when I was around five and like everyone, was terrified of going to the bath after.”

“I was around four or five years old when I first watched Jaws so it was one of the first movies I remember seeing. I watched it on TV with my mum who let me stay up late, which added to my excitement. Once I’d seen it, I couldn’t get it out of the head. The shark, the excitement, and the characters. I was obsessed”, said Williams.

The movie isn’t just about a shark, it goes beyond that. It focuses on three men, their fears, inspirations, and baggage. After many re-runs of the film, fans realized the need to share their stories and experiences watching it. That’s one of the reasons why the fan community for this movie has grown and become stronger over the years!

I am a passionate writer just trying to figure out life and myself. Writing has always been a way of expressing myself, hence most of my work is pretty raw and unprocessed. I try my best to be unapologetic about what I write. This internship in ByProduct Ventures has allowed me to push myself and see what all I am capable of. I have always pictured the future me as someone very creative and this opportunity takes me one step towards that. Apart from writing, I also love expressing myself by painting or drawing. All I want from life is to keep learning, falling and rising and to live every moment like it is my last! (aditigautam1705@gmail.com)
