Fredrick Douglass: In Five Speeches is about 19th-century abolitionist Frederick Douglass and is based on David W. Blight’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 2018 biography and produced by Henry Louis Gates Jr. Along with readings from Douglass’ three autobiographies by André Holland, this also features performances based on portions of speeches that Douglass gave over his lifetime, by Nicole Beharie, Colman Domingo, Jonathan Majors, Denzel Whitaker, and Jeffrey Wright.
In his Douglass biography, Blight explains his subject as a writer and orator of genius who said what he meant and meant what he said. Those words, or at least the carefully chosen ones here, still roll like thunder across the years and still strike like lightning.

Actors Nicole Beharie (Scenes from a Marriage), Colman Domingo (Euphoria), Jeffrey Wright (Westworld), Jonathan Majors (Lovecraft Country), and Denzel Whitaker draw from five of Douglass’ legendary speeches to portray a different moment in the tumultuous history of 19th century America as well as a different stage of Douglass’ long and celebrated life.
Douglass will deliver speeches on 5 topics. Those are as follows:
i) “I Have Come To Tell You Something About Slavery” (1841) performed by Denzel Whitaker.
ii) “Country, Conscience, And The Anti-Slavery Cause” (1847) performed by Jonathan Majors.
iii) “What, To The Slave, Is The Fourth Of July?” (1852) performed by Nicole Beharie.
iv) “The Proclamation And A Negro Army” (1863) performed by Colman Domingo.
v) “Lessons Of The Hour” (1894) performed by Jeffrey Wright.
