Created by Masamune Shirow, Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 is a Japanese original net animation (ONA) anime series based on the 1980s Japanese manga series Ghost in the Shell by Masamune Shirow, set in the Stand Alone Complex sub-continuity.

The first season premiered on Netflix worldwide on April 23, 2020. It received generally negative reviews, with critics considering it inferior to the previous Ghost in the Shell media due to multiple factors. Despite that, the series was renewed for a second season, which is scheduled to release soon.

Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 Plot and Cast

The trailer of the second season suggests that we can look forward to a season that is heavier with action and features every weapon we can imagine. From regular guns to the traditional Ghost in the Shell deadly robots, and even missiles and a threat of nuclear strikes, Season 2 poses an idea that puts in danger the very concept of the Sustainable War – a futuristic conflict in which the remaining countries fight for resources.

The trailer also reveals that there is an increase of a new threat: a group that identifies themselves as “N”. People whose cyber-brains went haywire and made them become super-individuals known as posthumans. They are fast, skilled, and look like formidable opponents – and they want their independence. The trailer wraps up with a 1984 reference, indicating that this season will also get political and touch on subjects such as free will and rebellion.

The casts of the second season includes Atsuko Tanaka as Major Motoko Kusanagi, Akio Ohtsuka as Batou, Kōichi Yamadera as Togusa, Yutaka Nakano as Ishikawa, Toru Ohkawa as Saito, Takashi Onozuka as Paz and Tarô Yamaguchi as Borma. We would also get to see Sakiko Tamagawa as the Tachikoma, Osamu Saka as Daisuke Aramaki, Megumi Han as Purin Ezaki, Kenjiro Tsuda as Standard, Kaiji Soze as John Smith and Shigeo Kiyama as Kurisu Ōtomo Teito.

Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 Season 2 Release Date

Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 was renewed for a second season after the release of Season 1. Netflix has officially confirmed that the second season is scheduled for release on May 23, 2022.

The new season is expected to have 12 episodes like Season 1 with a runtime of 24 minutes each. The makers will soon reveal the rest of the details as the release date approaches.
