It has been a long time since that epic battle in the Colosseum. Ridley Scott’s epic historical film Gladiator came out in 2000, and won a plethora of awards, including an Academy Award for Best Picture. And after 20 long years, a sequel has finally been confirmed, and that is some good news!
Gladiator 2- What we know so far
Gladiator ended with an epic battle between Russell Crowe’s Maximus and Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus, with the former emerging victorious. It was a bittersweet revenge for Maximus, and as he succumbed to his injuries as well, he gave the film a powerful yet emotional ending.
There has been no confirmation about what the storyline will be in the sequel, but what we do know for sure is that the events in Gladiator 2 will take place about 25 years after those in Gladiator. In November 2018, it was announced that Ridley Scott would be directing a sequel to Gladiator. He has been working on a script from Peter Craig, of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay fame.
There still has not been any official news about the cast of Gladiator 2 yet. Russell Crowe’s character died in the end of the first film, but he still might make an appearance in the sequel, in the form of flashbacks. There are speculations that the story arc of Gladiator 2 would center around Lucius, the nephew of Commodus. Lucius was played by Spencer Treat Clark in the first Gladiator film. He might return as a grown up Lucius in the second Gladiator film, as that seems to be a frontrunner idea for the plot of the sequel.
Release Date of Gladiator 2
The film was announced in November, 2018, and Ridley Scott has been working on a script with Peter Craig since then. There has been no official release date announced yet. And with Ridley Scott already riddled with other projects, with one of them being the much-awaited untitled prequel to Alien, it seems unlikely that we will see Gladiator 2 in theatres anytime before 2022.
