Grey’s Anatomy Season 19: Release Date, Plot, and more!

Created by Shonda Rhimes, Grey’s Anatomy is an American medical drama television series. The series focuses on the lives of surgical interns, residents, and attendings as they develop into seasoned doctors while balancing personal and professional relationships. Rhimes was also one of the executive producers alongside Betsy Beers, Mark Gordon, Krista Vernoff, Rob Corn, Mark Wilding, Allan Heinberg, and, recently, Ellen Pompeo.

The first season of the series premiered on March 27, 2005. Grey’s Anatomy has been well received by critics throughout much of its run and has been included in various critics’ year-end top 10 lists. Considering that the makers have renewed the series for its 18th season. The last season premiered on September 30, 2021,  On January 10, 2022, the series was renewed for a 19th season,  which will premiere on October 6, 2022.

Grey’s Anatomy Plot and Cast

Grey’s Anatomy season 18 left several unanswered questions so there is plenty of ground for season 19 to cover. Firstly, after the residency program was cut at Grey Sloan hospital, Miranda Bailey resigned and Richard Webber took leave to go on holiday with his wife Catherine. This saw Meredith choose to take over Bailey as Chief of Surgery so season 19 will see her in her new role.

That new role put her relationship with Dr. Nick Marsh on the line though, after she told him to go back to Minnesota without her. Despite chasing him, she got there too late, with Marsh having seemingly already left. Surely it’s not over for them though?

There are also unanswered questions about Dr. Hunt and Dr. Altman who are on the run with their children after Hunt was reported to Bailey for his assisted suicide program. With both being the main characters, will they return? Kim Raver – who plays Dr. Altman – told People: “I mean, look, I hope that’s not the way we’re ending it. There is still a lot to be told with these two.” She added: “There are still stories to be told”.

Raver also said about the next season: “Season 19 is going to be insane. It’s like the bomb exploding and what is the fallout going to be? What show can pull off 19 years?”

A couple of regulars have already been confirmed for Grey’s Anatomy season 19, including Ellen Pompeo as Dr. Meredith Grey, James Pickens Jr. as Dr. Richard Webber, and Chandra Wilson as Dr. Miranda Bailey. We would also expect the following to make a return- Kelly McCreary as Dr. Maggie Pierce, Caterina Scorsone as Dr. Amelia Shepherd, Camilla Luddington as Dr. Jo Wilson, Jake Borelli as Dr. Levi Schmitt, Chris Carmack as Link, Anthony Hill as Dr. Winston Ndugu.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 Release Date

The 19th season was renewed On January 10, 2022. Now, it has been confirmed Grey’s Anatomy season 19 will premiere in the US on 6 October 2022. We expect around the 20 episodes for season 19 too, though nothing is confirmed as yet.

For those in the US, Grey’s Anatomy season 19 will be available on ABC when it arrives. It will also likely stream on Hulu as season 18 did. For those in the UK, Grey’s Anatomy season 19 will likely come to Sky Witness when it lands. You’ll therefore be able to watch them with a Sky or Now subscription. Nothing is confirmed on the UK side as yet though.
