Created by Tim Federle, inspired by the High School Musical film series, and produced by Chorus Boy and Salty Pictures in association with Disney Channel, “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series”is an American mockumentary musical drama set at a fictionalized version of East High School, the school at which the original movie was filmed, and a group of teenage theater enthusiasts who participate in a staging of High School Musical: The Musical as their school production.
Starring Olivia Rodrigo, Joshua Bassett, Matt Cornett, Sofia Wylie, Larry Saperstein, Julia Lester, Dara Reneé, Frankie Rodriguez, Mark St. Cyr, Kate Reinders, and Joe Serafini, the series first broadcast on November 12, 2019, on Disney+.
The latest season premiered on Friday, May 14, 2021, on Disney+.
The students from the school where the High School Musical films were shot stage a musical production based on the franchise.
“The outpouring of love and support for season 1 has been incredibly exciting, and I’m thrilled that the Wildcats are putting on Beauty and the Beast in season 2,” Federle said in a statement. “It was one of the first Broadway shows I ever saw, when I was 14, and it’s got all the perfect metaphors for the high school experience: Do people judge me for how I look? What is true love? Will I achieve the future I dream of? And, perhaps most importantly, it’s got dancing forks.”
