His Dark Materials Season 2: Release Date, Cast, Plot and more!

Published

on

His Dark Materials is a marvelous fantasy thriller novel trilogy authored by the British author Philip Pullman. HBO and BBC jointly adapted it to a live-action TV series which premiered its first season in November last year. The series has been a great hit and has encompassed a huge fan club already. The series is directed by Jamie Childs (also directed by Doctor Who in 2018), William McGregor and several others. Pullman along with Jack Thorne wrote the series adaption of the film. The show mostly is honest to the book except for in the appearances of some characters.

Release Date

One of the lead cast members, Lin-Manuel Miranda, took to Twitter to announce the end of filming for his role for season 2 back in September, prior to even the release of the first season in November. The producers BBC and HBO committed the show at a go for two seasons. They did this over the concerns that 14-year lead cast member Dafne Keen would look older in the second season if there was a significant gap in filming and would cause character discontinuity.

No official release date has been out yet for season 2, but showrunners have hinted towards its return at the end of 2020. We expect the show will return in the same timeframe as it premieres its first season, in the first week of November.

Cast

The cast season 2 is expected to be the same as the first season if the second season also sticks to Pullman’s books. We will again see Logan fame Dafne Keen as Lyra Belacqua, Ruth Wilson as Marisa Coulter, Clarke Peters as The Master, James Cosmo as Farder Coram, Ariyon Bakare as Lord Boreal, Split fame James McAvoy as Lord Asriel and Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby.

The hot priest from Fleabag who was also Sherlock’s Moriarty, Andrew Scott will play a significant role in the second season as Colonel John Parry, father of Will Parry. Scott did a cameo in the first season as well. The supporting cast will consist of James Cosmo as Farder Coram, Ariyon Bakare as Lord Boreal, and Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby.

Plot

The plot of the second season will be based on the second book in Pullman’s trilogy, The Subtle Knife. The show is anticipated to return bigger and better plot twists and thrills. It is quite apparent that Will Parry might assist Lyra somewhere in Citagazze during the beginning of the second season. Fans expect Magisterium to play a still larger role in season 2 than the first one.

In an interview with Radio Times, James McAvoy gave an insight about his character Lord Asriel’s role in season 2: “Asriel’s storyline in book two, what he’s getting up to we hear snippets of and all that – so if we can actually portray some of that it might be a fun thing, as long as it doesn’t rob the narrative elsewhere.

“It might actually be a fun thing for fans of the books to see this thing that they’d only heard little snippets of but never actually got to read a whole chapter of in the books. That might just be like an Easter Egg, an extra nugget, adding stuff rather than changing stuff.”
