“I’m sorry for not being who you expected me to be. Who I expected to be.”

The American comedy-drama series Insecure has been officially renewed for the fifth season after the successful fourth season this year which premiered on April 12, 2020. The series is created by Issa Rae and Larry Wilmore and is partially based on Rae’s acclaimed web series Awkward Black Girl. It had been quite popular because of its quirky relationship of two best friends Issa and Molly and their struggles to “settle” in life, juggling with both personal and professional lives and all these experiences are manifested from the point of view of two African-American women, giving us a detailed perspective of their psyche. The show owes its fame to the relatability of the content, and the audience already feels like that they are also a part of their lives.

Back in 2013,  Rae began working on a comedy series pilot with co-creator Larry Wilmore. Anyway, the storyline was planned to be the awkward life affairs of two African-American women, which ultimately gave birth to the title of the show Insecure. At HBO’s 2016 Television Critics Association session, which featured Rae, showrunner Prentice Penny, and executive producer Melina Matsoukas, Issa Rae explained that the series would examine “the complexities of ‘blackness’ and the reality that you can’t escape being black.” More shows are made and being made to showcase the minorities and community of color, and Insecure is one of them. Such shows tend to move ahead with the ambition of breaking the stereotypes and exhibit the cultural roots of such coteries.

Issa and Molly always got each other’s back since college days and proceeds to dig up and explore the reality of social and racial issues that are faced by them on a day to day basis. The fourth season got a rating of 8.2/10 on Rotten Tomatoes and 95% approval from the audience.

“Insecure continues to be one of the funniest, warmest, and most beautifully-shot comedies that take full advantage of its sunny L.A. setting.”

Good news for the fans, the show had been up on the nomination list of Emmy for ‘Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series’, ‘Outstanding Music Supervision’, ‘Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing’, ‘Outstanding Cinematography’, ‘Best Supporting Actress’, ‘Best Actress’, and ‘Best Comedy Series’.

The show stars Issa Rae as Issa, Jay Ellis as Martin, Yvonne Orji as Molly, Alexander Hodge as Andrew, Kendrick Sampson as Nathan and many more recurring.
