Uncut Gems is an American crime thriller released in 2019. The show follows Adam Sadler who plays Howard Ratner, a jeweler in New York City. When he makes illegal bets, the story takes a turn. ‘Uncut gems’ on Netflix is a $19 million budget film. It earned about $50 million at the box office. Josh and Benny Safdie directed the film while Ronald Bronstein wrote the screenplay. Official synopsis on Netflix reads: “With his debts mounting and angry collectors closing in, a fast-talking New York City jeweler risks everything in hopes of staying afloat and alive.”

In this thriller hit, we find Howard’s assistant, Runner in Diamond District, the black Opal from Africa as purely fictional parts. Real event 1: Kevin Garnett

Kevin Garnett is a former NBA player. He plays himself in the film. On the Uncut Gems DVD featurette- “Money on the Street: The Making of Uncut Gems,” Safdies explain the need for a player in the film. Their first choice was Joel Embiid. But he is an active player and hence they could not rope him in. then Kevin came as a boon and acted well in the movie. Speaking about Kevin, director Josh says, “He brought in this story from his past, certain connections that he had, superstitions that he would have during the league. He added that all into it. We were like, ‘OK, if that’s what he’s thinking, then we have to go back and add that to the script.’”

“We looked at basketball players from 2012 on, and saw, ‘OK, what were their games like? Did they have any gem games?’” explains Josh. When it landed on Kevin,” Josh explained in the behind-the-scenes featurette, “then we started to look at his game pool. You have to ask, ‘OK, when does this movie take place? When are the games that we can find?’ It was constricted. It had to be three consecutive games in the northeast, basically in the New England area, because of the reality of a player get in and out of New York.” Is ‘Uncut Gems’ on Netflix a true story? Ben also put forth his points, “And the order of the games is important. He had to have an incredible game, and then right after that, he had to have a terrible game. Then he had to have an incredible game again. It was funny because he didn’t have a lot of bad games that year!”

Real event 2: The singer

The film also has The Weeknd- Canadian Singer. This is also a real character who plays himself in the movie. The makers adjusted the timeline to fit in the popularity of all roles. Is ‘Uncut Gems’ on Netflix a true story? Real events revealed!

“Even though he was 36—he was in the twilight of his career—Garnett’s games had rebounds, end-points, and intensities. That informs the bet, and that informs what Howard is getting excited about. How often in a movie do you see a rebound get cheered?” Josh makes us understand the intricacies of weaving a story with real characters and fiction.

Real event 3: The Basketball game

Celtics Vs. 76ers, the last game of 2012 also gets a place in the movie. NBA Eastern Conference Semifinals game is shot for the movie. This is important for the plot. Howard Ratner [the lead] bets on this match thereby attracting more debt for himself. This game is part of the real events that took place in the movie.
