The Joker is a popular character of Christopher Nolan’s 2008 super hit superhero movie, The Dark Knight, based on the DC Comics villain character of the same name. The role is played by the Australian actor, Heath Ledger. The character of the Joker is a psychopathic criminal mastermind with a sadistic sense of humor, who was hired by Gotham City’s mob officials to kill Batman and had a conflict with the allies of Batman.
The character of Joker is full of chaos, anarchy, and obsession throughout the movie, he wants to upset the Gotham Police through crime and likes to define himself by the conflict with Batman. The Joker wears traditional purple and green color dress with his facial appearance in the look of a clown to cover the scars with a Glasgow smile, and curly green hair.
Heath Ledger was criticized for the casting as The Joker, but later it was regarded his one of his finest performances and received widespread acclaim. Ledger himself enjoyed the character to the utmost. In words of Ledger, ‘The Joker was a psychopathic, schizophrenic, mass-murdering clown with zero empathy’. He wanted a fresh interpretation for the character apart from the other movies. Ledger and Nolan had common reference points to bring some freshness to the character of Joker.
The Joker appeared in The Dark Knight as a part of a six-member gang wearing clown masks who rob a mob-owned bank. He tricks the four of them to kill each other, and he killed the last man himself, and after that, he escapes with the money. He interferes with the mob officers and offers to kill Batman for half of the mob’s money, but when Gambol, the mob boss refuses to accept his offer then he killed him and took over his gang.
The Joker was not mentioned in the sequel of The Dark Knight which was released in 2012, titled The Dark Knight Rises, out of respect for Heath Ledger. It’s been 12 years since the release of The Dark Knight and Heath Ledger’s iconic, Oscar winning character, Joker that took the frightening force and made a huge place in the heart of the fans all across the world, the character is unforgettable.
