LABYRINTH 2! ARE YOU COMING OR NOT?

“Labyrinth is one of the seminal movies from my childhood that made me fall in love with filmmaking. I couldn’t be more thrilled to expand on Jim Henson’s mesmerizing universe and take a new generation of moviegoers back into the Labyrinth.”- said Fede Alvarez, a few days ago, when asked by DEADLINE magazine about the sequel to Labyrinth. The bid was Fede Alvarez is handling the Labyrinth 2 project and will direct it. Also, the script would be co-written by Jay Basu and Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy). We came to know that a draft of the script was almost complete and the shooting would start in the coming time. The fans were going berserk and were already taking sides on whether a sequel to the cult classic would be plausible or not.

What happened?

“It’s so hard to decide what’s worth your time. And what’s worth the attention of the audience. Labyrinth was something I was going to do at some point, but then I stepped down. I just felt…when people have a preconceived notion of what something should be, it’s very hard to succeed – to surprise them. They’re just expecting the same thing again. So I just decided I didn’t want to do things as a director that people knew already what it was. Or have a preconceived notion of how it should look on the screen. So Labyrinth would be something that people would judge that way, so I decided not to do it. My last movie (The Girl in the Spider’s Web) was me going to make a movie for the studio for the first time, like from inside.

There were some things that I enjoyed and some things I didn’t about that. I’ve since wanted to just make the movies that really matter to me”-said Alvarez on a podcast with the Boo Crew. THIS IS JUST SAD. At the time when people are already suffering from COVID crisis and depression of being locked down, Alvarez stepping down as the director shatters our hopes. Now we know that Alvarez was busy with his ongoing “The Girl in the Spider’s Web” sequel, but do we really need another iceberg in the way of our favorite cult classic and nostalgia concerning David Bowie?. We can’t judge Alvarez on his choices, but there is something fishy going around in the studios regarding Labyrinth, almost a year when the so-called “script was ready,”,  Jennifer Connelly, the original star of the film commented that she was not even told about the sequel. So yes, “Something’s rotten in the state of Denmark”, isn’t it?.

What’s Labyrinth about  and why the buzz?

Labyrinth, starring David Bowie and  Jennifer Connelly is a 1986 movie about a girl Sarah(Connelly), who wishes her younger brother(Toby) away to a Goblin King Jareth(Bowie) and she must navigate through a magical maze to find her brother or he would change into a Goblin forever. At the time when this was released, Labyrinth wasn’t a hit and performed meagerly on the box-office, but as the years passed by it became a cult classic and was re-ran in American theatres again and again. It was the last film of director Jim Henson and was written by Terry Jones.
