LG’s new trademarks Flex, Foldi and Duplex hints to foldable smartphone

The next big thing in smartphones is supposed to be flexible smartphones that fold in half. Samsung has already ordered components for its foldable smartphone while Huawei confirmed they have a working prototype. Many other manufacturers like Microsoft, Apple OPPO and even LG has already filed patents for flexible smartphones. LG now filed a patent couple of days ago hinting that the foldable smartphone may already be in development.

LG filed the patent with the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office) on November 21 for three names: Flex, Foldi and Duplex. The filing is categorized class 9 products, which is an umbrella category in which smartphones are also included.

The company doesn’t have to use the names necessarily just because it was trademarked. The company already have the “G Flex” trademark which it used for the curved smartphones in the past that could bend to some degree. If LG wanted to re-use the name for its foldable phone it would have to re-submit the trademark, which LG had already done. Interestingly, Samsung is rumored to name its foldable smartphone along with the lines of “Galaxy Flex”. “Duplex” can be a perfect name for a foldable LG smartphone with double displays.

LG received a patent for two foldable smartphones early this year which were filed back in July last year. The first patent shows a device having separate bodies joined by a single display. When it is fully stretched, it opens to the size of a tablet and when folded it can take back the shape of a smartphone. A secondary screen is also present where it can display information like notifications, time and date along with a camera module at the rear.

The secondary foldable concept phone has a similar design as the first one but its back panel contains a transparent section where it can display information like notifications, time and date. Both the devices contain a hinge where it can fold, which is why both “flex” and “duplex” fit naturally in the products. Not only that LG got a patent for a smartphone this July that can fold in half through a hingle mechanism.
