Lupin: Plot and Cast

Inspired by the adventures of the Gentleman Thief Arsène Lupin, the protagonist, Assane Diop played by Omar Sy, plans a heist in order to seek revenge from a rich and powerful autocrat who wrongfully framed his father for stealing a diamond necklace. Ashamed of being accused of such a crime his father hangs himself in his cell, leaving young Assane orphaned.

Twenty-five years later, determined to prove his father’s innocence he comes across a journalist, Fabienne played by Anne Benoît who once crossed swords with Pellegrini, resulting into him destroying her career. Teaming up with her Assane decides to publicly defame Pellegrini and exposing him publicly.

The show also revolves around the father-son relationship between Assane and his father as well as between Assane and his son Raoul, played by Etan Simon. The book ‘Gentleman Thief Arsène Lupin’ gifted to Assane by his father was his inspiration to pull off this perfect crime. Assane is sent to posh school by an unknown benefactor where he also comes across his lover claire portrayed by Ludivine Sagnier and the young romance starts to blooming. A few years later they also have a son. Assane introduces the stories of Arsène Lupin to his son as he comes of age, as his father did to him, which is very touching.

The series has yet another, acting as a social commentary about racial discrimination, power of the rich and class. It displays the injustice done with a poor man by his employer just for his own personal benefits.
