Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom: Plot and Cast
The film is based on Gertrude ‘Ma’ Rainey who was one of the earliest African-American professional blues singer and is known as “The Mother of the Blues”. During the course of an afternoon recording session in Chicago, 1927, a band awaits Ma Rainey, waiting to record another song in her wonderful voice.
However, she comes in late to the session and tries to take over the control of her music from her white manager. While she fights with the manager outside the studio, the band crew waiting inside becomes impatient as it gets hotter.
Levee, an ambitious trumpeter, wants to make his own mark in the blues music industry. He wants to take Ma Rainey’s songs in a more contemporary direction to launch his own career and decides to spur a series of stories, full of truths and lies, that change all of their lives.
Viola Davis plays Ma Rainey while Chadwick Boseman plays Levee. Glynn Turman plays Toledo while Colman Domingo plays Cutler. Michael Potts plays Slow Drag, Taylor Paige plays Dussie Mae, Jonny Coyne plays Sturdyvant and Jeremy Shamos plays Irvin.
