5G is going to be one of the most significant trends in the upcoming smartphone universe. We all know that 5G, being capable of downloading a 1GB file in 3 secs has huge network’s possibilities. That being said, the chip maker MediaTek too is now planning to enter the 5G arena. Notably, the company is now gearing up to launch a 7nm SoC with support for 5G cellular connectivity.
MediaTek is bringing this out at a time when the likes of Qualcomm, Apple, and Huawei have already unleashed their 7nm chipsets. The company will be offering a chipset with 5G compatibility, manufactured in 7nm process.
To be precise, MediaTek is going head to head with Snapdragon 855, A12 Bionic and Kirin 980 from its competitors. These SoCs were already launched in various smartphones. We’ve already seen 5G in Galaxy S10 5G and Huawei Mate X, respectively.
Moving further, Finbarr Moynihan gave the information regarding MediaTek’s 7nm chip. He is the vice president of corporate sales and business development of MediaTek. He also claimed that the chipset could be seen in the flagship devices. That’s such a welcome development given MediaTek’s renowned guarantee to budget smartphones comprising entry-level and mid-range sectors.
At the moment, the company’s top-tier SoC is the MediaTek Helio P90. Digging in, the Helio P90 is built on the 12nm manufacturing process. And now, the company will be moving directly towards 7nm SoCs. For enabling 5G, the 7nm chip will be backed with MediaTek’s M70 5G modem. Keeping all these aside, the MediaTek executive was modest regarding the specifications of the chipset.
If reports are to be believed, the chip will incorporate Cortex-A76 CPU. According to MediaTek’s engagement in considerable budget smartphones, we could be addressing the phones with MediaTek’s 7nm 5G chipset. Also, it might arrive at economical prices compared to the Qualcomm and Huawei correlatives. This might be good news for Infinix and TECNO Mobiles. These two brands are trying very hard to get attention with some great offerings. Winding all this up, phones with the 7nm 5G SoC might start coming out in the Q2 2020.
