Ari Aster is one of the youngest and most interesting auteurs of American cinema. “Hereditary” a horror film released in 2018 and directed by Aster became the highest-grossing A24 film of all time. Aster then directed the multiple-awards nominated folklore horror “Midsommar” which was praised by critics and audiences alike. Aster defies all expectations as to what “Film” should be. Midsommar, despite being a horror genre flick, did not have shadows or any dark frame, it only had brutally sunkissed landscapes. Such experiments are what we expect from Aster’s new film whose screenplay he has been writing.
“All I know is that it’s gonna be four hours long, over 17 [years of age],” Aster told aspiring filmmakers about the new screenplay he just finished a draft on. Additionally, he said it would be a “nightmare comedy.” This news came along when Aster was in for a talk at the University of California, Santa Barbara’s A.S. Program Board.
At the talk, he was asked “What inspired him to make movies?” to which he said: “Loving movies … I’ve always been obsessed with movies and then at a certain point I just wanted to make them. I guess the urge on some level is to have a dialogue with your heroes. You grow up, you love so many films, you love so many filmmakers that you kinda want to engage as deep of a level as you can.”
As expected, Aster is going to break all norms yet again in his new film, but we can’t necessarily say that a ” Four- hours long, nightmare comedy” is what he actually means. Aster calls himself a genre film-maker and themes like horror and comedy will be much recurring in all his projects. Even “Midsommar” had funny and absurd quirks about their characters while they did horrible things to each other and yet “Midsommar” was almost two and a half hours long. So with Aster, anything is possible and we would just have to wait for new updates about this exciting project.
