Tom Hanks, star of Forrest Gump and the tearjerker Philadelphia, plays Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd in this film. He is a widower and a Civil War veteran who tells stories from around the world. While travelling in Texas, he is tasked with the job of taking a young ten-year old girl Johanna back to her aunt and uncle.
Johanna Leonberger was taken by the Kiowa people years ago and is now being sent back against her will. Kidd and Johanna travel hundreds of miles in order to reach home and face many challenges and dangers on the way.
Helena Zengel, a young German actress, plays Johanna Leonberger. Michael Covino plays Ron Avalon while Fred Hechinger plays Thomas Kidd. Neil Sandilands, who also played a role in The CW’s The 100, plays Wilhelm Leonberger in the movie.
True Detective and The Walking Dead actor Thomas Francis Murphy plays Merrit Farley and Mare Winningham plays Jane. Unbelievable actress Elizabeth Marvel plays Gannett while Nigerian-British actor Chukwudi Iwuji plays Charles Edgefield.
