On my Block: What do We know about Season 4?

Netflix has some high-end content when talking about marginalised communities. “On my Block” is a  beautiful show which represents, not only the Black community but also the problems faced by families and people living in dangerous and shady neighbourhoods. This was something that America and other “First World” nations had forgotten. It tells the tale of four friends trying to make a life and harbour peacefully in L.A’s most dangerous neighbourhood. The show with its witty and satirical take on contemporary American life manages to tackle the issues like adolescence, friendship, crime, loyalty and life in general. The last season was released in March 2020 and was praised by the audience and critics alike. However, Netflix is yet to announce the dates for season 4.

     What do we know about On my Block: Season 4?

After the release of season 3 in March 2020, fans are now waiting for Netflix to throw some announcements about the season 4, Netflix is yet to do something like that, but given the situation and the pandemic, season 4 may get delayed. We expect season four to come out in 2021 due to ceased productions around the world. The cast, however, gives a positive response towards a new season. The cast also discussed the ending of season 3 after the season was released.

“It’s probably one of the most realistic endings that I think we’ve had… People evolve and they grow, and sometimes they grow apart. The way that you were two years ago is different.” – Sierra Capri, discussed with Entertainment tonight.

Towards a new season, Jason Genao said –  “Oscar was Cesar when he was Cesar’s age, and then he grew up and understood what it really meant to have a life. So then Cesar did that whole aspect where he was like, the little innocent thing, and turns into Spooky, and now hopefully, he’ll learn. And I think that’s how it evolves.”

“Cesar” is played by Diego Tinoco, he said that he has high hopes for season 4  “I trust the writers and the story isn’t over yet, just like life. I mean, he’s dealt with so much traumatic stuff going on in his life… so much trauma that you’re gonna have a little bit of a crash.”

The creator, Lauren Lungerich, elaborated the idea of a poetic ending while talking to Paste, she said: “I think that ending is such a great place of resetting because the idea of this show has always been, you know, what Mario said in the pilot: You have to stick together in order to survive, and so what does it look like for these kids, who are each other’s chosen family when they’re not together? And how do we get them together again, if they are meant to be together?”

Series co-creator, Jeremy Haft, while talking to Hollywood Life, gave way to a new plot for season 4, he said:” If we [get] to season 4, we definitely would have some flashbacks to help fill in what happened to the Core Four. With Jasmine, the Core Five. And with Spooky, the Core Six.”

   What is “On my Block” about, and how do the critics respond?

The show is based on the life of four friends and their friendship bond. Their tryst to each other is tested when they struggle to grow and live their own personal life on the strict, dark and terrible neighbourhoods of Los Angeles. The first season was released in 2018 and the second and third seasons were released in 2019 and 2020 respectively. Rotten tomato gave 95% ratings to the series.
“One of the many remarkable things about this series is how it folds crime and the awareness of potential violence into everyday life, which is something white sitcoms never do unless it’s a Very Special Episode.”- wrote Matt Seitz of New York Magazine.
