Kids, get ready! Netflix is all set to release an American-Chinese animated film called Over The Moon. The movie is musical adventure film produced by Pearl Studio and Sony Pictures Imageworks. Glen Keane directed the film while John Kahrs served as a co-director. The late Audrey Wells, who was the screenwriter for The Hate U Give and Guinevere wrote the script for the musical. Over The Moon: Cast and Plot
The musical is inspired by the Chinese goddess Chang’e and her husband Houyi. She is the goddess of the moon and is famous for having stolen the elixir of immortality from her husband. After her husband finds about her theft, she seeks refuge in the moon. Every year, the Mid-Autumn Festival takes place to commemorate her. Most people celebrate it with ‘moon cakes’.
Fei Fei, our young protagonist, grew up hearing all about Chang’e. After her mother dies and she has trouble adjusting to her stepfamily, she decides to build a rocket ship to the moon and find the goddess. Audrey Wells dedicated the script to her husband and daughter. It was her last project before she died in 2018 after battling cancer for five years.
Cathy Ang voices Fei Fei, John Cho plays Ba Ba while Ruthie Ann Miles plays Mother. Ken Jeong plays Gobi, Robert G Chiu plays Chin, and Phillipa Soo plays Chang’e. Margaret Cho plays Auntie Ling, Sandra Oh plays Mrs Zhong and Kimiko Glenn plays Auntie Mei. Finally, Artt Butler plays Ma Ma.
Over The Moon: Release Date and Trailer
The film will be shown at the Montclair Festival on October 17, 2020 and will be subsequently released in theatres and on Netflix on October 23, 2020. Watch the trailer below!
