What Is Penny Dreadful: City of Angels About?
This show is described as a ‘spiritual descendant’ of the original. It is set 50 years after the original during the Golden Age Of Hollywood. The setting is in 1930 Los Angeles. The characters are connected in a conflict between Santa Muerte and her demoness spiritual sister, Magda. Santa Muerte is the Mexican folklore deity and the caretaker of the dead and guide to the beyond. Detectives Tiago Vega and Lewis Michener are assigned with a gruesome murder case. They become involved in racial tensions, the threat of war, and Nazi conspiracies!
The city of Angels will show a balance between the supernatural and political issues. Here’s what John Logan said:
“Penny Dreadful: City of Angels will have a social consciousness and historical awareness that we chose not to explore in the Penny Dreadful London storylines.” He continued, “There are no easy answers. There are only powerful questions and arresting moral challenges. As always in the world of Penny Dreadful, there are no heroes or villains in this world, only protagonists and antagonists; complicated and conflicted characters living on the fulcrum of moral choice.”
