After the success and positive response from the audience about Home for Christmas, Netflix gave a nod to their second Norwegian series, Ragnarok, and even renewed the series for a second time, after the premiere on 31 January 2020. The fantasy drama has been inspired by Norse mythology and is produced by the Danish production company SAM Productions. Ragnarok achieved a 7.5/10 rating on IMDb and many viewers compared the show to the famous American movie franchise, Twilight. On the other hand, it got a red light from the Norwegian audience and complained that the flavor was more of a Danish and the dialect did not match the dialect of Western Norway, even though the backdrop was of the same.
The description of Ragnarok on Netflix goes like this, “In a Norwegian town poisoned by pollution and rattled by melting glaciers, the End Times feel all too real. It’ll take a legend to battle an old evil.” The main reason behind the pollution was the Jutul family, the fifth-richest family in the country, and their factories emitting the pollutants. But surprises come in their own way, and that’s when the family was confronted by Magne, who believes is the avatar of Thor, and goes on to fight to save the planet. Even though Ragnarok managed to grab such a rating, but the reviews are heavily mixed. On one hand, positive reviews surfaced and appreciated the modification of Ragnarok but also the accurate depiction of Norse Mythology. The story was also kept away from American influence and the smooth acting of the casts complimented the pace of the series. On the other hand, apart from making the show Danish instead of Norwegian, it was also criticized for its inconsistency and seldom detachment from the story.
Ragnarok stars David Stakston, Jonas Strand Gravli, Herman Tømmeraas, Theresa Frostad Eggesbø, Emma Bones, Henriette Steenstrup, Gísli Örn Garðarsson, and Synnøve Macody Lund.
