Andy Señor Jr. and Victor Patrick Alvarez directed HBO’s Revolution Rent, which follows Señor Jr. to Cuba, where he is tasked with directing a stage production of the Tony® and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical “Rent,” the country’s first Broadway musical produced by an American company in more than 50 years.

Revolution Rent: Release Date

Señor Jr. embarks on a personal journey to his exiled parents’ birthplace, investigating his Cuban history and his family’s complicated relationship to the country they love. Revolution Rent will premiere on TUESDAY, JUNE 15 (9:00–10:30 p.m. ET/PT) to commemorate the renowned musical’s 25th anniversary on Broadway.

Revolution Rent will be broadcast on HBO and streamed on HBO Max.

What we know about the Documentary

Señor Jr. began his career in the late 1990s, playing Angel in Jonathan Larson’s Rent on Broadway, and has remained intimately linked to Larson’s work ever since.

From auditions until closing night, Revolution Rent follows Señor Jr. as he creates the breakthrough production, showcasing the various difficulties and achievements that he and his cast and crew face along the way.

This moving and insightful film reimagines Rent in a Cuban environment, focusing on Señor Jr. as he examines issues of family, history, and tradition.

The documentary also commemorates the musical’s Broadway opening on April 29, 1996, which took place 25 years ago. The documentary and Señor Jr.’s staging of Rent reinterprets the musical in a Cuban context.
