After a modest box office performance by the first two Riddick films, the franchise looked done and dusted. However, the protagonist of the films, Vin Diesel, had other plans. He revived the franchise with the third film, titled Riddick, which was a sleeper hit at the box office. Riddick released in 2013, nine years after the second film, The Chronicles of Riddick. The film grossed $98 million on a $38 million budget. Plans for a fourth film were announced in 2014.
Riddick 4: What we know so far
After the release of Riddick, Vin Diesel, in 2014, posted on his Facebook page update about Riddick 4. The post stated about Universal Pictures wanting to develop a fourth Riddick film. The huge DVD sales of the third film had supposedly prompted this decision. Later, Diesel announced that the fourth Riddick film will be titled Furya. It will release with an R rating.
In April 2016, Vin Diesel announced that he and director David Twohy were working on the script for a fourth film in the Chronicles of Riddick franchise. He even went on to explain that production on the fourth film might begin in early 2017. In his explanation, he said this about Chronicles of Riddick: Furya –
“Are you guys excited to hear about Furya? Do you want to know where it all began with that dark character Riddick?”
In an Instagram post in May 2020, Vin Diesel talked about the quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic, while providing an update about Furya in the caption.
With work on the script still being done, it is too soon to talk about a potential release date for Furya. It seems like the fourth film will also take a similar amount of time that Riddick took, after the second film. Nevertheless, fans of the franchise can expect more updates about Furya soon.
