Samsung developing new M9 OLED panels for the Galaxy S10

Published

Samsung is preparing next generation of OLED panels for the Galaxy S10. The details of the displays are tucked on a report about the reshuffling of organic material suppliers for the new Galaxy S10. It also confirms the screen sizes of the three S10 models the South Korean manufacturer is planning to release.

The company will reintroduce a flat-screen option for the base model with a 5.8-inch display. There will be also a more premium model with a curved display of the same size. The top-speced variant is said to come with a 6.2-inch curved panel, similar to the one on Galaxy S9+.

Samsung is planning to use new and improved OLED display called “M9” for the flagship series. The M8 generation was used for the Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ and Note 9 this year. However, the M9 will differ from the M8 with its use of new forms of organic materials.

As for the material suppliers, Samsung is working with a couple of new companies for the organic chemicals for the Red, Green and Blue sub-pixels. The red ones will be the supplier by American multinational corporation Dow instead or Neolux, who is the current supplier for the red host material for the organic light emitting diodes with the corresponding color. Also, another important thing to be noticed from this report is that the chemicals used in the latest Apple displays are classified under the LT2 tag which means it could account for the differences between Samsung manufacturer AMOLEDs used in the Galaxy series and iPhones.

It may mean many things for the display technology in the Samsung flagship series. There is likely to be improvements in the OLED panels in terms of luminance, color gamut. The flat display for the base model will also help in cutting costs making it affordable than the other two variants. However, the performance of these new ‘M9’ displays remains to be tested and we are excited for what Samsung has for us in the future.
