Samsung not very well known for its UI designs but the Korean manufacturers plans to change that with the upcoming OneUI. The company posted a new promo video showing off a number of features that will be offered on the final form next year. It says the new software is ‘made to focus’ and the new features surely back up this statement.
The new user interface got a major overhaul and doesn’t tend to lag or stutter like previous UIs. Though it’s very functional, it seems a bit slow but we can expect it to be fixed on the final version. The new UI highlights or underscores the most important elements to important clarity while options tend to appear or disappear depending on certain tasks. Icons and texts have also been enlarged or shrunk based on their priority to improve clarity. There are new styles and displays for the always-on display as well as lock screen clocks. The notifications show in a bubble that expands on the tab and we can check which fingerprint we have registered on the phone.
The OneUI allows you to swipe anywhere from the home screen to bring down notification panel. Swipe it once more it, the newly designed quick settings panel expands all the way to the bottom of the display for an easy one-handed use. The menus are split into two distinct areas: the viewing area showing future activities while the interaction area below shows details and possible actions. You now have the option to change grid settings with 15 grid settings style. The settings menu is pushed down all the way for easy access which makes sense for the tall Infinity displays.
There are also common UI themes reoccurring in multiple apps, for instance, the phone app has recent and contacts tab at the bottom of the screen just above the navigation bar which is also repeated in clock and messages app. There is also a dark mode and a dark keyboard that enables one-handed use. The OneUI is built on the latest Android Pie and it still retains some of the cool features of Pie. This includes change orientation button, new recent menu though there is a dedicated recent button, swiping left on home button switch to the previous app and more. Well-known theme designer Lucas Kendi said (via SamMobile) that One UI will allow more theme customization than before. It is expected to offer free themes only for 14 days after which they will be automatically removed.
Samsung OneUI is currently in beta and is expected to roll out the final stable version in January.
