Created by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, with all songs written by Paul who also serves as showrunner, “Schmigadoon” is an American musical comedy television series starring an ensemble cast led by Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key, the first season of which premiered on Friday, July 16, 2021, on Apple TV+.
A couple on a backpacking trip discovers a magical town in which everyone acts like they’re in a musical from the 1940s. They then discover that they can’t leave until they find “true love.”
A winking satire of Golden Age movie musicals with a decidedly modern spin, the half-hour, the six-episode first season follows doctor couple Melissa (Strong) and Josh (Keegan-Michael Key) at a wilderness retreat, where they hope to put the spark back in their relationship. But after getting lost in the woods during a torrential downpour, they wander into a magical town called Schmigadoon, where the cheery, old-timey citizens burst into song and dance ad nauseam. They soon learn they’re trapped in a musical, and the only way out is by finding true love, with each other or someone else.
