There is something about the action-comedy genre that Jackie Chan seems to understand much better than other actors. The famous martial artist and actor from Hong Kong has delivered a lot of great films in the genre, such as the Rush Hour franchise, the Police Story franchise, the Armour of God films, the Drunken Master films, to name a few. Another famous franchise in the genre that stars the famous actor is the Shanghai film franchise. The franchise has two films; Shanghai Noon (2000), and Shanghai Knights (2003). The films have been relatively successful, grossing nearly $300 million collectively at the global box office.
In May, 2015, twelve years after Shanghai Knights, MGM announced plans for a third film in the franchise. The film will be titled Shanghai Dawn, and will be a sequel to Shanghai Knights.
Shanghai Dawn- What we know so far
When the film was announced in 2015, it was reported that Jackie Chan, Owen Wilson, Lucy Liu and Fann Wong will all be reprising their respective roles as Chon Wang, Ray O’Bannon, Princess Pei Pei and Chon Lin. However, as things have progressed, only Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson remain confirmed to reprise their roles in Shanghai Dawn. Other cast members of the film still remain to be finalized.
Jared Hess was signed on as director of the film in September, 2016. He will work on a script which is being written by Theodore Riley and Aaron Buchsbaum. The story will be developed for screen by writers of Shanghai Knights, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar.
Shanghai Dawn is expected to be set in China, as protagonist Jackie Chan wants to showcase the country in the third film the way the old West was in the first two films. Gough further stated that Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson are as much a part of the creative process and the development of the film as him and Millar. He said-
“The collaboration of Jackie and Owen comes out on screen as they get along very well. With that in mind, you want to get their input in the story phase, so that when we got to script, it’s based into the DNA of the story.”
So far, no official release date has been announced for Shanghai Dawn. With a script being worked on, and the main cast and director of the film sorted out, fans can expect more updates about the film soon.
