The 2016 film Sing was about a koala trying to save his once-famous theatre from extinction, by hosting a singing competition; the prize money of which was misprinted due to a mistake by the koala’s assistant. The musical-comedy was written and directed by Garth Jennings. It was produced by Illumination Entertainment and distributed by Universal Pictures. The film received generally positive reviews, and had a box office collection of $634 million, against a budget of $75 million. The film featured the cover versions of a lot of famous songs, such as Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe”, Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”, Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off”, Elton John’s “I’m Still Standing’, Frank Sinatra’s “My Way”, and Stevie Wonder’s “Don’t You Worry ’bout a Thing”. The film also featured an original song called “Faith”, by Stevie Wonder and Ariana Grande. The song was nominated for a Golden Globe.
Following the success of the first film, a sequel to the film, titled Sing 2, was announced in January 2017.
The cast of Sing 2
Garth Jennings returns as writer-director for the sequel. Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy also return as producers for Sing 2. The film will see the original cast returning; which includes Matthew McConaughey as Buster Moon, Reese Witherspoon as Rosita, Seth MacFarlane as Mike, Scarlett Johansson as Ash, Nick Kroll as Gunter, Taron Egerton as Johnny, and Tory Kelly as Meena. Chelsea Peretti joins the cast of Sing 2 in an undisclosed role.
The film will be produced by Illumination and distributed by Universal, like its predecessor.
Release Date of Sing 2
Sing 2 was originally scheduled to release on December 25, 2020. The release of the film was then postponed in April 2019 to July 2, 2021. The film was again postponed in April 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Sing 2 is now scheduled to release on December 22, 2021, with Minions: The Rise of Gru taking its previous release date of July 2, 2021.
